Netgear Arlo Pro: easy to install

In principle, anyone who knows how to use a smartphone can install this Arlo app in camera. Netgear has designed its Arlo pro ecosystem so that the base station and cameras offer wireless functionality. The Netgear Arlo Pro home security camera system runs on battery power, and the battery lasts for several months on a single charge, depending on the manufacturer. Meanwhile, in the camera can be powered continuously via its micro-USB port when installed indoors/outdoor. For outdoor use (the camera is waterproof), the battery needs to be periodically recharged (its magnetic base station can be removed in seconds), unless you are using the optional Netgear is a Arlo security camera VMA 4600 solar panel. It recharges the camera battery continuously.

Netgear Arlo Pro: accessories included

The Netgear Arlo Pro VMS4130 (base station + 1 camera) package includes the Netgear Arlo base station, a Netgear Arlo Pro camera, an AC adapter, and an Ethernet cable for the base station (to connect to a set-top box or router) , a Li-Po battery for the camera and a magnetic holder repositionable for the camera.

Netgear Arlo Pro: Where to install the Arlo Pro Camera »

Absolutely everywhere. Since the camera is weather resistant, it can be installed outdoors. In addition, its infrared night vision system allows it to detect motion and record video in total darkness. As practical outside as in a child’s room.

Netgear Arlo Pro: installation

The process to follow when installing the Arlo Pro security system begins with the Arlo base station. This takes the form of a box with an Ethernet port and a USB port, which must be connected to an Ethernet port of a set-top box or router. Once this is done, the Netgear Arlo app (Android or iOS) can be installed on a smartphone or tablet. The application then detects the Arlo Pro Base Station and guides the user in pairing with a camera or cameras.

Netgear Arlo Pro: wide angle of view

The Netgear Arlo Pro camera is equipped with a very wide angle lens and can therefore be installed in a small room to monitor it completely. The compromise of this wide-angle lens is that the camera must be installed very close to the area to be monitored. That’s why it’s important to camouflage it with Netgear’s optional camouflage skin.

For our test, we decided to find out who crossed our lawn. We originally installed the camera on a window sill located on the second floor of our house and found that his field of vision covered the sidewalk and the roadside. Aside from the fact that this caused activation of the recording as soon as a car or a cat crossed the street (without looking), it was difficult to identify who was really approaching our house.

Netgear Arlo Pro: video storage

The Netgear Arlo Pro camera transmits real-time video recordings to the base station via its wireless connection. Note that the RF connection (up to 90 m) is separated from the local WiFi network, allowing the security camera to function normally in all circumstances and regardless of the available bandwidth. Videos are always stored online (cloud), in a private account accessible only to the user. However, it is possible to connect a flash drive to the Netgear Arlo base station, which can be useful when Internet connections are cut off.

Important: Video storage is completely free, but it is limited to 1 GB and a period of 7 days. Connecting a flash drive to the base station does not change anything. To benefit from more then storage, a paid subscription is necessary to Arlo camera

Netgear Arlo Pro: what is the quality of the image?

The Netgear Arlo Pro camera records in 720p at 15 frames / second in high quality mode (AVC codec, as for Blu-ray movies and HDTV). The image is good even quality in complex lighting  conditions (direct sunlight for part of the afternoon) and everything that was recorded was clearid derk. At dusk, if night vision (infrared) has not been activated, the image automatically switches to black and white (probably to avoid excessive color noise). It is  image is clear despite the darkness.

In total darkness, it is important to ensure that the camera does not film what supports it (a shelf, for example), as this would cause overexposure of the infrared light in this area and a “blockage the rest of the image. In our case, the walls next to the camera were overexposed in night vision mode, so we chose to disable it.

Netgear Arlo Pro: Personalized Home Security

Several custom home security profiles are available, based on to the motion and sound detection. A recording program can be configured (convenient to avoid filming) and the camera can also be activated according to the geolocation of the user’s smartphone. If the user leaves a defined area, the record is activated
